Re: Winter Drive Position

I picked up a new plastic molded cover off ebay. It was like $5 plus shipping.

I couldn't find any with a quick search. I will post this evening with the company name/part number that is on the cover.

It's called "STOR-IT" Stern Drive Cover, made by Ruston Pro-Star LLC, 61 Cedar St, Hillsdale NJ 07642, 201-358-8181

Re: Winter Drive Position

Hi Guys:

According to Section 6 - Winter Storage Page 35 of my 1971 Mercruiser Operation and Maintenance Manual Models 120-140-165 it says:

"Check all stern drive bellows before storing unit in the normal operating position. The universal joint bellows may develop a "set", if unit is stored in a tilted up position, and result in bellows failure when returned to service."

As I am the proud owner of a 1977 MCM 165 inline 6 then following the manual is good enough for me.

Re: Winter Drive Position

Very interesting............

Last saturday we almost bought a boat with an I/O--would've been our first as I've always had outboards. The owner told me it's best to store with the drive up as it keeps the bellows stretched out. His reasoning was it's likely that if left down all winter, one end of the bellows could pop off after months of being compressed. We didn't buy the boat, but thought I'd toss out this guy's reason for leaving the drive up.

Listing for Alpha and Bravo "sold out discontinued". Only Cobra still available.

I guess if I break or loose mine, its back to the garbage bag or make something like Ziggy did. :(

it wasn't real hard to make, nor very time consuming to make. it is however very effective and does what it was intended to do.
much better than the garbage bag. i used that idea for a season and it was not inspiring for doing work (keeping snow out) imho..

i don't understand folks. the word is out (facts, posted by kilowatts). at least for mercrusier. by mercruiser. down. if ya don't think they know how to treat the equipment they make. i don't know who does. ya can lead a horse to water, but ya can't make 'em drink... to ea. his own though. it's not my mercruiser that their storing. i'm still removing mine. if i didn't it would be down. all summer during use, it's down.
