Winter Engine Storage

This is my first year having a boat. I have to winter storage options. <br /><br />1. Pay 300 for the winter and have it placed in bulk storage.<br /><br />or <br /><br />2. Purchase a huge plastic/plether tent with sides and store in my yard. Obviously I like this option because it would be cheaper and would keep the boat at my place. I am just not sure if this will give my boat enough protection from the wind and elements. Clearly a shed or bard would be better. <br /><br />Is option 2 even a consideration for me? What level of shelter do I need so seek?<br /><br />Fiberglass boat, 175 Jonny outboard engine, columbus ohio<br /><br />Thanks for your help!!<br /><br />Jason

I would go with option 1. Think about it how much would you pay if your boat was damaged, I would at least do it for the first year any way. I always take my boat out of the water and leave it in storage, because in the end it is worth it.<br />Well thats my opinion anyway.<br /><br />------------<br />Wes

i would go with 2 first year, then look into 1. but the tent or shelter would have to be sturdy enuff. i worked in Ohio for about 3 months, sep-nov. the last week i was there, got about 3-4 feet of snow dropped on us. i would think that this could pose a problem for a weak shelter. here in OK, you can get a 2 car carport built for about 650$. this is big enuff for your truck and your boat. if you want sides then add about 200$. but this is still cheap. will have less than 1000 in it. that is three years of storage. if you plan to have your boat for longer than that then it would be a good idea.

Been storing my boat in my yard for years without a problem. However, should we get a snowfall of more than a few inches, I do brush off the tarps. <br /><br />Also created a support for the tarps out of some old 2x4's. Takes the weight off the windshield should we get a big dump of snow and I don't get out to brush it off.<br /><br />Don't forget to winterize your motor.<br /><br />Good luck!<br /><br />Brew
