Hello from across the pond! Firstly i would like to say what a fantastic forum this is, over here in the UK we have nothing that comes even close!

I have just bought my first boat :D - i'm not quite sure what make it is atm, hopefully someone might be able to identify it. It's 15' 4", and is basically just a fibreglass shell with a good galvanised trailer - cost ?130 which i thought was a pretty good deal. I'll post some better pics up soon with the work i have done

It needs repainting, re-upholstering and steering and outboard fitting. So i'll have my work cut out over the winter.

I have a few newbie questions that i have tried researching the answers to but have got a little confused, mainly about re-painting the hull at this moment.

The hull is already painted so my plan is to sand it down, not all the way to the fibreglass, then primer and paint it with boat specific materials, using a roller.

My confusion comes from the gel coat. Will i have to apply a new gel coat on top of my new paint, or will it be alright just the paint? It will be kepted in my garage and only be used in the summer during the day, so will spend no longer than 10 hours in the water at a time. Also, how can i tell whether the existing paint has a gel coat on it already?
