Winter project seagull outboard

Hi all
Most will know, I live an old 2 stroke outboard or two in the garage have far too many to count almost and seldom used.
For those interested, thought I’d share my latest acquired.
Assume there isn’t many over the pond there, but she is a year or two off half a century old…and considered a youngster and recent engine, in the seagull outboard world.
Should keep me busy for a while. Loving the simplicity of these old things.
I was astonished to learn that these things are actually expected and designed to take in a little water to mix with the gearbox oil. I kid you not. It’s actually in the manual !! They require the manual wrap of a pull rope to start too. As far as I can tell…to stop them running, one must either wait to the fuel runs out, or put your hand over the carb to choke it into a stop. Brilliant. Many other unusual features I could mention too, like a spring design on the prop instead of a shear pin. A serviceable spark plug (identical to a 1940’s rolls Royce ! Not to mention the incredible oil mix ratio of 10-1

Brilliant. I’ve every assumption that they aren’t of much use these days. Just remember seeing loads of them as a kid. Fancied a go at owning one for years since. Likely be an ornamental thing after one outing !

When I was growing up my uncle had a small sailing dingy with one of those. It always ran flawlessly for years...

If I remember correctly it said ------" Best outboard for the world "-----On them.------Which means that in remote places / islands you might find a blacksmith / shop that can make a new bushing.----Much harder to find a local shop that can make a new ball bearing.-----Much easier to maintain an old time magneto than modern electronic modules !!!

Says lots, that there are still many in use here. The other one we got was from the late 1940’s. It’s just fired into life in the last hour there. For the first time in decades. All it needed was a carb clean, points clean and a fuel tank clean. Amazing. 70+ years old !

That's probably about the same motor as my uncle's, he would take me and my cousin out in a cat rigged dingy.. they don't sail close so the motor got used when needed. Good memories!

Amazing. Love to hear things like this. All about nostalgia and memories for me too. Reality is that I’ll be probably taking an old Yamaha 2 stroke along with me, as a back up, for the maiden voyage though

If you want that motor to survive, heed the 10:1 Mix. I am very serious about that.
An added Bonus of the 10:1, you will get many thank you's for keeping the Mosquitos at Bay
