Hi all,

I am interested in upgrading my 96 Mariah with the 350 Merc 2bbl. Is this as simple as just replacing the carb or does it require additonal parts?

I am curious if the heads are the same on the 2bbl and 4bbl applications, to see if they can flow the same. Will the intake manifold need to be replaced as well? Is this an electric choke?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Thank you all!

Ayuh,........... the Same........
Will the intake manifold need to be replaced as well?
Ayuh,.......... In 96, you Might have Vortec heads(8 manifold bolts)...... Probably Not(12 manifold bolts).........
You Must have a 4bbl. manifold, or the swap is Useless...........
As to Which manifold,.. Count the Bolts....
Is this an electric choke?
Probably............

BTW,... Welcome to the iboats forums...... :)

Bondo,

Thanks for the heads up, I appreciate it.

This might seem like a stupid question, but I will present it to the community anyway. Is the intake manifold marine specific, or would I be able to utilize a performance product from the automotive industry.

Thanks again, what a great resource this community is!

That would depend on the Mineral Content of the water you'll be boating in.........
Aluminum will work in Freshwater, or with a Closed Cooling System.....
Other than that, Cast Iron is the "Prefered" material......

I've never Heard of the Place called Technical...??
What Country is that In, Anyway ???? :D

I suppose I should change that ;)

Minneapolis is the home port, so I might be able to get away with the aluminum manifold. That sure does open up a few hundred possibilities!

Would that also mean that I could utilize a non-marine carb set up? If so, what would you think the max would be, 750?

No,...Nope,...Nada,....No Way..............

A Marine Carb is Vented into the venturies, with J-tubes..... A Must Have Item.......
what would you think the max would be, 750?
Way Tooo Big...... You'll be Loosing the Vacuum Signals to the carb.......
A 350cid can Only move about 565CFMs,@ 5000RPMs........In a Perfect, Well Breathing motor......
Anything over a 650CFM is Tooo Much......
That sure does open up a few hundred possibilities!
Ya,... Well,.. Don't get Carried Away......
There's No Sense in trying to add alot of volume to the Intake,
Because in this application, the Exhaust is a Major Choke Point........
Thru-Hulls will Help, But, to build any Real Horsepower, You Start with Headers.........

Bondo, thank you for all your help, I have been searching for these answers for months and until today, have gotten nowhere.

I assume the Quadrajet carb is the way to go?

Then I can find any manifold that will accept a spread bore base?

I know.. I know.. rookie.. ;)

Personally, I've fallen in Love with the Merc/Weber/Carter/Eldebrock AFB Carb........
My 4.3LX had 1 on it when I got it... Ran Way Rich at idle, Trolling Speeds..... Ya, I'm a Troller....
I Finally Found the Carter Strip Kit, part # 10-201.. Handfuls of Needles, Jets,+ Springs...
Now, My Plugs run a Beautiful "Coffee & Cream" Brown..... No More Raw Gas Smell,+ Black Plugs........

Then I can find any manifold that will accept a spread bore base?
Ayuh,....... If you want a Rochester........
And,
"In 96, you Might have Vortec heads(8 manifold bolts)...... Probably Not(12 manifold bolts).........
You Must have a 4bbl. manifold, or the swap is Useless...........
As to Which manifold,.. Count the Bolts...."

The AFB Carbs are a Square bore mount....

Hey Bondo, mind if i cut in and play for awhile??

Going to anyway.

Even thought the quadrajets are a decent carb, they are somewhat troublesome and difficult to adjust.

I used to be a Holley man, but over the years I have decided that I like the Carter, Edelbrock carbs. With a "Strip Kit", they are infinatly adjustable, and I think a much smoother carb. Make sure you buy a marine unit though, and you can use an intake manifold that will either accept a Holley or the Edelbrock.

Welcome aboard.

The Edelbrock/Weber/etc. 600CFM Marine carb (1409) is a great deal. It's available several places brand new for under $300.00.

Dave

As Bondo says, check the number of intake bolts to be sure, but most likely it is the standard 210hp. I believe most of the 96-97 gen+ (vortec) were injected engines. '98, I think started the 2brl vortec.

Re: Winter project, upgrade my pathetic 2bbl to a 4bbl.

1900sx and anyone else,

My boat is currently in storage for the winter without the ability to get into it to look. So, am I to assume that my 350 is equipped without the roller cam? It's a 96. I guess the current HP rating is 210, what will I expect to see after the above mentioned Weber 600CFM carb and a new intake manifold? Would I then be able to step up a pitch on the prop too?

I know, lots-o-questions...

Re: Winter project, upgrade my pathetic 2bbl to a 4bbl.

You Should Have,
A Post-1987 style block, with the 1pc. seal,+ a roller cam/lifters....
With an Intake that's held down with 12 Vertical Bolts..........

About 260hp.....
Would I then be able to step up a pitch on the prop too?
That's a Different Chapter, in a Different Book.......... :D

Allow me to say a bit.

Around here, alot of the fresh water lakes will not allow water craft with carburaters, (did I spell that right)? on that body of water. I am thinking TBI. Just a thought for those who are thinking about carbs and such.

BTW, 81 degrees here today...I think I got a sun burn! no pic;s...sl

Re: Winter project, upgrade my pathetic 2bbl to a 4bbl.

While I hope Bondo is right about the roller cam, for my own sake :D , from the info I found, you can't tell for sure until you look inside :( . I wouldn't let that change the decission going to 4brl anyway. I'd wait on making any prop change until you have dialed the new carb in, and see where you are at with WOT.

FWIW, I'm doing the same mod to my '97 5.7L, and using the edelbrock performer and plan on the 600/625 weber/edelbrock/carter. I was too chicken to go to the high rise used by the 350 mag engines
