I agree . .. No insulation is No heat ...

Bag your work zone and have adiquate ventalation depending on the project ..

Too many fumes will make your loved ones camp out in the tent :) ..

If you want to make a little investment I would get one of these....I used one in my 24 x 32 shop in OKC....works great even when its 12 degrees outside. Heats the shop up in no time. I used to use a salamander, but got tired of turning it on then off then on! Its nice to set a thermostat on the wall and forget it till your done. I also have one in my garage. If you are going to live there for a while you won't regret having it. They also make a 45000 btu which would probably work great for you. Natural gas is also available.

Re: Winter Restoration - Heater for garage recommendation

living in WI, I have used a 250,000 BTU propane unit with a 20# tank. the tank would freeze up in under 5 minutes. so, switched to a 40,000 BTU salamander. a little better, however ended up with too much condensation causing rust on everything metal in the shop. then I went with a wood fired boiler, and left the garage at 40+ degrees.

actual amount of BTU'sdepends on where you live, the amount of insulation, the size of the area, and the temperature delta between outside and what you want to warm the area to.

Good point on the humidity, that is another issue I had until I put in the Mr Heater unit. (vents combustion gas to the outside)

I use this to heat my 8,000 cubic foot woodshop ( 20 x 30)
http://www.mrheater.com/product.aspx?catid=45&id=25
Will bring it from 30? to 70? in about 20 minutes.

I use something of the same design in my garage (just differerent brand). It's a 40kbtu - 80kbtu unit (low, med, high settings). It works fantastic, but I would highly recommend using it with a 40+ lb tank, as the little 20# grille ones will freeze up. They (the tanks) aren't too expensive at Menards or Home Depot.

I'm actually considering buying a used home furnace, though, and rigging it up in my garage. You can pick up used natural gas furnaces for $150 on craigslist around here. I have an ouside door that I have permanently shut, and I was thinking of removing it and building an outside "room" for the furnace. Then you just need to pipe some natural gas, some 110v for the blower, and a t-stat, and you're all set.
