Winter stake for mooring

Hello Everyone, Happy New Year.

I ran a search for ( winter , stick, stake ) and no results came up, so I have to ask....

What is the best way I can make a winter stake for my mooring, that is sitting in about 5-8 ' ( low tide ) ? I have found some articles that contrdict each other, so I am left with two impressions.

1- Make one out of 4 X4 that is 8' long, so that it will let the chain lay in the bottom mud. But I think that this will just create an 8' long piece of floating wood.

2- Make one 4' long so chain kinda keeps it upright ?

Any input, or even a better way to do it?

I have a mooring that is serviced by some local marine folks. The sticks that they make/use are about 3-4 feet long so that the mooring chain rises and lowers with the tide and the stick does not seem to touch bottom in any case; it is upright.

I have not examined the sticks closely, but they look to be 3" PVC pipe with some flotation inserted. (more buoyant than wood)

Will it get iced in?

If so, it must remain vertical.
A fence post, with the smaller diameter end (taper) up, will survive best in ice.
