hi there

in some countries wintertime is coming...

My mecanic is doing the winterisation for me, but as far as I understand, no fogging oil will be sprayed into the engine. (Obviously this is not done anymore)

The boat will sleep about 6 months - do I really need to oil?

as your in switzerland i would definitly do it especially for the sake of a can of spray.if you have a diesel engine you will be safe but if petrol your taking a chance of the bores rusting and the rings sticking to the cylinder.if you read any boat book this is what it will tell you or let your mechanic foot the bill when all goes wrong.is he a boat mechanic???????????????

I have a friend who never fogged, a couple winters ago he decided to pull his heads and have them redone. When he removed the heads, he found a bunch of rust in his cylinders! Since then, I've been fogging!

Fogged today (for the first time), just follow the directions, it's easy to do... and cheap insurance against rust...:)

I would not be so quick to think lack of fogging is responsible....when people remove the heads, it's for a reason...usually a head gasket leak or some other catastrophe which might very well be responsible for the corrosion in the first place.....

I would like to see if anyone has pictures of fogged vs. unfogged cylinders at the time of recommissioning...now that might be worth looking into...but nobody takes the heads apart just to look at them...

It might be helpful to post what you have.

Some engines (like MPI Mercruisers ) are not fogged according to the manufacturers recommendations.

I truly believe the "recommendations" to not fog are based off of particular "applications" of fogging. If the only application is running it through the fuel system or spraying a bunch down the manifold via the throttle body/TBI/MPI etc then maybe not. But pulling plugs and fogging each cylinder that way can't hurt any applicable boat engine if done properly.
I personally would not let an engine sit (depending on the storage environment) for any length of time without fogging the cylinders via some fashion.

Now, will it be fine without? Very possible, yet it's not worth me not knowing.

Yeah....They do use the term rather loosely don't they? They're using the actual INJECTORS to do the "Fogging".

That is not "Fogging" as most of us define it.

If I was going to "fog" an injected engine I would probably pull the plugs and squirt the fog directly into the cyls while cranking either with the starter or a wrench.

Real "Fogging" or the type like described above allows people to handle a few snake oils and I'm sure that the placebo effect is probably well documented.

Having said all that, if you leave your boat out in the rain or park it in the water in a marina, you probably should fog it using whatever method is recommended for your particular engine.

I park my boat in a dry closed garage for about 9 months out of the year..... I don't "fog" the engine.

My last boat went 39 years (1966-2005) and was never fogged.

YMMV....

He has a Baja with a fuel injected 454 running a ProCharger with a 5 lb pulley, he took the heads off to have them "worked" to get some more flow. It had zero issues, just a performance thing. ;)
