If dry, do most of you leave the petcocks off, or replace after draining? (I assume most pull the petcocks rather than just open them so you can ream out the drain hole while draining).

I've got an '89 4.3L Cobra if that makes any difference.

I usually leave them out to help 'air dry' any remaining moisture, but now that I think about it, I wonder if putting them back on but leaving them open might be a better idea (just need to remember to close 'em while 'unwinterizing' the boat).

Thoughts?

I throw mine in the glovebox with the drain plug all winter. They all get put back in at the same in spring. No particular reason, I guess...just my habit.

I just spot checked Mercruiser manuals #10,#15 and #16.All three recommend using antifreeze in the engine for storage. It's in the section about how to drain the cooling system.

DHP

I pull mine out and leave them out I do ream the block and manifold holes while they are draining with a 45.cal wire brush for block and 22.cal for manifold mine is a 1970 so I do get a flakes of rust and scales always coming out. Every year the water does seem to drain cleaner.

Here on Long Island where we depend on aquifiers for all our water needs we must be very diligent when it comes to what goes into the storms drains and the soil itself,if we want to continue to enjoy our bountiful supply of fresh water. If I even have a fleeting thought of flushing AF from a winterized boat I look at the grand kids and say to myself, hell, an engine can be replaced!

Guess this is comming down to how safe bio-degradable and non-toxic means on the label.Unless some of you guys are trying to use permanent AF in you boat (the green stuff). That actually is very good for the engine, but very bad for all of us otherwise, and not reccommended.

DHP
