bought my boat cheap because previous owner did not winterize. 3 freezout plugs popped. the exhaust manifolds shattered as did the block under the intake manifold. only takes a few hours tops to do,but saves a chunk of chage and aggrivation. unless you want to sell me your boat cheap.

What would be the easiest way to winterize a 1984 50hp 4cyl mercury outboard. I'm mechanically inclined, but this is my first boat so I'm nervous about tearing the motor apart.

not really sure about outbords, i imagine you still need to drain any water out of your engine, run no toxic ant-freez in through the muffs, change your lower unit gear lube, fog the carberator, and disconect your battery and set on a battery tender. gas treatment like "stabil" as well. your owners manual might give some instructions, or pick up a hanes or chilton's manual for your engine. ask a reputable boat mechanic, they usually don't mind sharing info if you buy supplies from them.

Go to freqently asked questions of this forum. It will tell you how to winterize your outboard. It's not all that tuff and you don't have to tear down anything. The water will drain out when you pull it of the water. Keep the engine vertical. You don't need to run anti-freeze through the muffs.
