This is my first winter for these engines and I am concerned if I winterized them correctly. They are closed cooling. According to the instructions, I have to drain the heat exchanger and detach the raw water pump hoses at teh water pump, crank the engine a few times. The instructions also point to a drain on the side of the block, but when i opened that, antifreeze came out. I also opened the drains on the exhaust manifolds, but little to no water came out.

Did I do this right? Was I supposed to drain the block of the coolant? I also put a vacuum on the raw water hoses and sucked out whatever was left. The heat exchange to the hot water tank also was on the coolant lines and not on the raw water. Did I miss anything?

While you don't drain the block, some Volvos that have closed cooling only have a half system. Meaning that the exhaust manifolds and risers have raw water in them. I'd check to see and if they do you better drain them. Even if the exhaust manifolds are on the closed cooling circuit, the exhaust risers still have to be raw water cooled and must be drained to prevent freeze damage.

Can you even drain just risers in a full closed cooling system? Do you even need to?
