I am fairly new to the boating scene, but was just curious as to what winterizing a boat consists of? Can anyone help me out? And can it be done by an individual or does it need to be done by a marine mechanic?

You need to mention what type of drive you have. Hard to help without knowing what you have. Aren't you being a little pre-mature? Tuesday was the first day of summer!

Haha, ya, I guess I am, but I worry alot! sorry I forgot to include the engine info. It is a Volvo 2.3L 4cyl with a Penta 275 outdrive. It has the freshwater and sea water cooling system.

I pay someone that way if it goes wrong I have someone to blame, at 200 bucks to witherize it is worth it. Find a Vovle marine dealer let them do it, but make your appt. early enough you don't get caught out in the cold!!!

Nothinbig-----about $150 of your $200 charge is for the marina's liability insurance.

I prefer to buy the $40 of oil, filters, antifreeze, etc. and do it myself.

I do it myself also, but I understand the process and have some mechanical apptitude, however, even though I'm sure that I do it right, I never have that peice of mind to know that if the block cracks over the winter, that I could call the dealer to say "hey!.. I got all this water stuff coming out of the side of the block, what does that mean?" and know they will cover their mistake. If your not comfortable, then pay someone...

Matt, maybe you didn't go far enough. Go to that forum again. The last one is WINTERIZING. Kinda hard to miss. Click it. "Cotterman has "Page 1" and "Page 2"...click them. And JB has a good post on the rest thats needs attention. And one more thing. Come September, there will be 639 different post on winterizing...you will want to move to Florida just to get a way from the madness..........

Matt..I was flipping through postings when I came across your winterizing post. It is now March so I assume you winterized or moved south, I did both! I bought my boat off a guy who lived in St.Catharines Ontario, Canada. Hetook it out of the water and left it in the marina to freeze, I got a great deal the next spring. Then I did not winterize in time,, the manifolds cracked with just a little freeze. Now I live permanantly on an island in the Caribbean.Like I said though, I read the other posts and you know what,Pay the $2oo, take out your batteries and have a good winter. or move south, I highly recommend the 2nd option
