I have a 2011 Mercruiser 5.0 MPI with catalytic converters on it that is raw water cooled with fresh water. The engine does not require ANY fogging or EFI mix when winterizing it so the catalytic converters (cats) due not become clogged with oil and are ruined.

Can I spray fogging oil into each cylinder via the spark plug hole or will this harm the cats when it is started in the spring?

Will lack of fogging the engine greatly increase corrosion?

What do all of you think?

Ayuh,.... Honestly,..... foggin' oil is a marketin' ploy, 'n pretty much a Useless expense for a 6 month lay-up,...

If yer mothballin' a motor for 6 Years,...
Ya,... plain ole motor oil in the spark plug holes, 'n roll it over a couple times....

Just like Antifreeze,.... Purely a Marketin' gimmick, 'n Nothin' more...

yes

consult your local mercruiser dealer for the proper winterizing procedure

even using non-recommended fuel additives can harm the catalytic converters, according to mercruiser

What's the serial number of your engine.

The engine does not require ANY fogging..................

Can I spray fogging oil into each cylinder

If it doesn't require it why would you do it?

Just follow the manufacturer's recommendations. They know best!

All 3 gave the same advice - Don't do it.

If that isn't what you wanted to hear, then go do it anyway.

Re: winterizing a catalytic converter equiped engine

Here's the thing, Mercruiser does not recommend using fogging oil. But they still have a method of fogging the engines with catalytic converters.
I am guessing, but fogging oil could have about anything in it, but the outboard oil with a TCW3 spec does the job fine, Volvo has been using outboard oil instead of fogging oil for many years.

Here is from the owners manual for your engine.

Merc has a procedure for preparing engines for winter and extended storage, and now you don't want to use it? What happened, get scared off by comments from people that probably don't have a cat engine, or have no knowledge of the cat engines?

Don S,

I should have correctly explained. I am going to use the mercury method outlined in the manual that you provided to me. Thanks for the help.
