Winterizing a motor that won't start?

Hi guys,

I've got a Volvo Penta 3.0 in a Glastron boat with starter/flywheel/vapor lock?/other? issues. See here if interested: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=424468

So, I can't start the boat to run antifreeze, fog the motor, etc. for winter.

Can I winterize this thing? Or should I take the motor out and bring it into the basement for winter. I'm going to have to take it out at some point before next spring, but I'm not sure I can/will be able to get in inside before the freeze.

I think I can get past the freezing water/cracked head thing by removing all the hoses, impeller, opening the petcocks, wire brush, etc, but I'm not sure about if I have to fog the motor. What do you guys think? Thanks for any help!

As for fogging it, pull the plugs out, drop some motor oil down the carb and in through each plug hole and turn it over by hand a hole bunch, put the plugs back in 1 or 2 threads. In the spring, pull the plugs out and use the starter to crank the motor over to blow out any sitting oil.

you can still winterize with out starting,drain the hoses of water,drain the block,every motor has 3 or 4 drain plugs on bottom,pull the therm.and pour antifreez right down the hatch i used 4 gal last nov never had any problems freezing,put the out drive in the down position drain water out of that or y could just remove,why does everyone think y have to start motor to wintererize ,main thing make sure no water is left,as far as foging i never did ,just stable fuel never had any issues not foging,some people pour all kinds of fluids in carb not a big fan of that,causes more problems later.

First figure out why it will not turn?
Pull the plugs and see if you may turn it by hand.
Any water present in cylinders?
If water, get it out and fill into the plug holes a can of WD40/ engine oil or whatever so piston/rings does not seize up.
Then get it out as soon as possible.
Drain the manifold and block, but do not attempt to fill any antifreeze if water in any cylinder!!!
Pull the drive and store in your basement, it needs to get off anyway to get the engine out.

Take 20 min to figure out why it won't turn over.Pull plugs check for water.Pull drive, then try to turn over.Starter not binding?
Still won't turn then Marvel Myster Oil in the cylinders and let it set.
Yea remove all hoses and petcocks.Make sure the riser plugs are removed too.J
