Winterizing?

Hi Folks.
Best wishes to all and hoping Sandy didn't slam anyone too bad but i'm sure there is some suffering out there as an aftermath.
A possibly simple question for most and just checking prudent procedure. I own a 1989 Mercruiser 3.7L inboard, outboard. Apart from draining the heat exchanger of raw water and ensuring the glycol content of the engine is correct, are there any other steps you would reccomend before winter storage in this relatively mild climate. Thanks in advance.TheBoyner

Re: Winterizing?

Yes, I believe that hurricane Sandy did effect a few people . . .

Where are you at, as it is difficult to say what sort of temps you will be up against this winter.? you will want to drain the raw water out of the manifold/riser, depending on what type of closed cooling system you have.

A bit more info in your post would be helpful for a response.

Re: Winterizing?

All you need to do for freeze protection is check the antifreeze and drain the exchanger, as you have already done, so you are all set there. Your p/s cooler should be on the vertical line from the back of the exchanger to the exhaust elbow and will drain when you drain the exchanger. No need to drain the manifold. Here is the manual for your engine, page 29 has winterization procedures (p 29) Boatinfo - Mercruiser Service Manual nr. 8 - 1985-1989 - Mercury Marine 4 Cylinder Engines If you have access to electric where it is stored, a good battery maintainer is a worthwhile investment.
