Sorry, I mean the intake manifold where water doesn't seem to drain. I have an inch of water sitting in it after taking the thermostat off.

I am just wondering why the official winterization guide on this forum doesn't explain or detail on getting the water removed from the intake?

Because the forum is not Mercury Marine, Volvo Penta or OMC/Bombardier. It is a bunch of good people who have tried to present the most complete information possible. But they are people, not marine manufacturers. You see back in the old days, we had no choice but to use manufacturer's manuals. We had no one to ask, you had to buy or borrow the manuals. So you got it right from the manufacturer. So yes the Forum has great information but it may not cover every single situation, variation or changes made over time. So if you want to be a real back yard marine mechanic, get a factory shop manual. I did when I got our boat 15 years ago and have learned as much as I could, right from the manufacturer. The rest from the forums, yes, but if you do your own work it is your responsibility to research your exact engine/drive combination. And sometimes that means getting a real shop manual.

FYI this is from an OMC service bulletin, but it applies equally to all 4.3s be they OMC, Volvo or Merc from '96 and up.....
[h=3] Freeze Cracking of Intake Manifold[/h]

Late Production 1996 (NC) and All 1997 (LK) 4.3 Litre Engines

Late production 1996 (NC) 4.3 Litre engines, with the suffix letter "S", and 1997 (LK) 4.3 Litre engines have a water-cooled intake manifold that requires draining before off-season storage. Failure to properly drain the intake manifold could result in freeze damage to the intake manifold.

(1)(2) There is a pipe plug @ located at the front of the intake manifold. Remove the plug and lower the bow of the boat to ensure complete drainage of the intake manifold. Replace the plug after draining the intake. Tighten the plug securely.
