I recently finish the gutting and re-doing my old lund boat and wish to install a selector switch for two battery banks.
One being the starting battery and the other for the trolling motor battery which gets a lot more used as the years pass on.

The Johnson outboard manual states a 5 amp alternator and a 20 fuse but I cannot find anything on the starter output. The longest lenget would be 12 ft.

As I understand the wire size is base on the starter rating output.

Thanks,

Bill

first off, the starter doesnt have an OUTPUT, it has a DRAW.

i have sizo 1/0 wire for my batteries and my selector switch, and they are about 8 feet away from each other( on opposite sides of the boat) and each one is about 5 feet from the motor.

whenn selecting wire siize, look at the largest freeken wire you can afford, then get the next largest size. you thank yourself later.

Thanks for the input but as start reading on the net I see if you double the lenght than go to the next size larger as a rule of thumb.

My current feed cable is 10ft and I need 12 ft to the selector switch. Than I must add the 8 ft for the longest run to a battery so it appears to be a double.

I have a six gauge and need a four unless I can find the amp draw of my starter.

Thankd again.
