wire going into lower unit ? 2001 Mercury 150HP

I accidentally pulled out a small black wire that is runs outside the motor and down into the lower unit. What does is this wire for, and do I need to remove the lower unit (hope not) to reinstall it? If I do have to remove it, where does this little wire go down in there.

It this black 'wire' a tube? If so, it the speedo tube. The only wire that should be going to the lower unit is a stainless steel continuity wire....

it's a very small black tube... so a "speedo tube"? I'm guessing this is for the speedometer which is worthless on my boat anyway. Can I get away with not reattaching it? Or will it mess something else up?
