wire harness

Hey. I have a 1996 5.8 (Ford) with a DPC drive. Harness plug is giving me trouble. The boxy one not on the engine. Jumpy tach and now cutting out. I have put almost 50 hours on her since re power. She has been running fine but this problem has plagued me in the past. Push and wiggle and the issue temporarily goes away. Is there any technical, detrimental, reason why I can not cut out the plug, splice the wires, heat shrink and be done with the connectors? There is the pin plug on the engine if I ever need to separate engine from harness.

Thanks
Vinny

Re: wire harness

If the sole purpose of the plug was to facilitate manufacturing, like mine, there is no reason not to. The fewer the connections, the fewer the failures.

Re: wire harness

I would terminate each end of the connector and use a terminal block, just in case the engine ever needs to come out.

Re: wire harness

Thanks guys for the feedback. I found the bad connection in the harness plug. Quick repair and off to a good start so far. Ran off shore the other day and no issues. I just put in a new engine so hopefully it will not need to come out soon. I think this winter I will cut, splice and heat shrink each wire and abate the plug. I can always pull the round pin plug on the engine. Yes it had 2 plugs about 18 inches apart. Thats a Volvo...

Thank you again,

Vin
