Hello to all!! I just purchased a Grady White 18' with an Evinrude 115hp. The wiring is an absolute nightmare, wires everywhere, one battery in the transom one in the bow. I plan on re-wiring everything, but before I begin I need a few questions answered:

1. What is the best way to provide a ground for the system?

2. Does the Evinrude 115hp/1988 have a generator? I just purchased a book, but it hasn't arrived yet.

3.I plan on using 14g tinned wire, most likely a Toyota 1978-85 fuse panel.....where is the best spot to locate this, transom or under dash?

That's all for now, thanks to all who reply.

mlund12,

Yes, the engine has an alternator. It has a relatively small output of 9 amps.

I would forget the idea of the Yota fuse panel. Buy a marine one.

Everything musty be grounded to the battery. If you like, you can put a "hot" and "ground" outlet (stud) in the console. I have done that many times and it works well. Typically I will run an 8 guage wire from the battery to those power sources. This saves running two wires for every component.

I rewired by 28' Formula with twin 350s completely from scratch. Here is some general advice.

Use good quality marine grade wire and connectors like that produced by ancor marine. Each wire is individually tinned to prevent corrosion.

Read all the good info in the tech section of Ancor:

http://www.ancorproducts.com/

Buy high quality marine grade fuse panels/ circuit breakers and bus bars. I like Ancors and Blue Seas.

Buy the Seloc manual for your setup. They have lots of really good schematics.

Have the right tools - double ratcheting crimpers, good DVM, etc.

Rather than fuses, I really like marine, push button, sealed breakers mounted right at the helm.

Blue Sea makes good stuff
