Hey all,

Wondering if anyone has done this to their Chrysler motor or knows how this works. I have a 73 85hp Chrysler magnapower and I want to add a lanyard kill switch for safety purposes. I have a normally open kill switch. I know you can wire it to positive points wire and then to ground but I'm not sure I understand how this works. If my ignition is on (key is turned on) and i pull the lanyard, wouldn't that just fry the ignition coil? Does shorting the circuit damage the coil or anything else?

If it's damaging, is there another way to wire it in that is less damaging? Maybe somehow on the key ignition?

Thanks in advance!

No
The kill switch does the same thing as the key switch.
To start the motor the key removes the ground from the magneto. To stop the motor the key grounds the magneto.

Place the kill switch across the same 2 contacts of the key switch (2 mag terminals)

If this is a " battery powered " ignition , then you may have to OPEN the circuit to stop the motor.

Ok perfect i will try this on my ignition as I have two M terminals that are completely unused. Do I need to wire one of the mag terminals to the positive of the points? I guess not since the key switch does it without correct?

???----If the 2 " M " terminals are not used , why would you wire them in now ?

Oh maybe i misunderstood what alldodge meant. I have a key ignition with

B - used
I - used
S - used
C - used
M -
M -

So how would i wire in the normally open lanyard kill switch to act the same way as turning the ignition off key?

How many and what color wires are on the I terminal?

one blue wire
Then racerone is correct and I was wrong
The key places 12V on the coil to start and removes to stop
Place normally closed (NC) switch in the Blue wire. When lanyard is pulled it will open the connection and kill the motor

Thank you guys! Figured NC kill switch would be the way to go they are just very hard to find. I'll keep searching. Appreciate your help

Most kill switches work either way, NC or NO, just attach lanyard to the other contacts on the back

Use a NC (contact closed when lanyard is in) lanyard and wire it in series with the keyswitch blue (ignition) wire and kill switch.
The ignition is a battery system and the battery is charging the capacitors in the Motorola CD box through the red wire and the blue wire enable the ignition coil to work.
