Wiring a voltage regulator

I have a 1988 mariner 150 outboard and I have experienced high voltage running aver 3K rpms (17-18v) The battery has been fully charged with a charger, the rectifer is brand new this year. I purchased a voltage regultor to install to fix this problem. Unfortunately, there are no instructions or diagrams in the box with the regultor.

The motor as designed and built does not have a voltage regultor, so I can't just replace wire for wire.

The regultor has 2 yellow, 2 red and a gray wire. I need some help as to how to wire this in. Any help is greatly appreciated.

If its the CDI rectifier,wire color per color and it does not matter which red you use..

Let me help.

I assume you got one of the 16-20 amp either mercury or CDI regulators with 5 or 6 wires coming out of it.

Yellow wires go to the stator, makes no difference which goes where.

red wires both go to battery, usually at the starter solenoid connection.

black, if it's there, goes to ground. Otherwise be sure you have a solid
ground through the mounting screws.

Grey goes to the tachometer.

BTW, high voltage at 16 amps on a battery indicates the battery is nearing end of life. It might not even charge well when you get the regulator hooked up. Problem is bad battery.

Thanks - I'll take another shot at this. I do not have a black - the ground is through the housing connection. The battery is 1 year old and took a full charge through a charger just 2 weeks ago. The water is topped off and seems to be ok, but sometimes ya just don't know. Thanks for the help

Just a quick thought, you're new piece is both a rectifier and regulator. You can chuck the old rectifier in the trash and then the wiriing will make sense.

Thanks for making that clear - The thought crossed my mind that this piece replaces both parts - and your are right - until I realized I no longer need the rectifier in the circuit, I was confused.

Anyway - I have a brand new rectifier that I installed a month ago that I no longer need. Give a shout if someone needs one
