I wouldn't need this if the colours on my motor agreed with the wiring diagram in my Clymer manual and if the manual showed anything on the gearshift connections and a couple of other wires floating around the end of the harness.

Anybody know where I might get a diagram on these aspects, preferably on the internet?

Tinkerer2

Unfortunatly, there are no longer online diagrams. Can you exlain what you need info on specifically and maybe we can help you sort it out. I assume you have an electric shift lower unit that you need help on and various other componenets. Let us know, as someone may have a manual or know what you need. My Manual only goes back to 1973.

RB

Thanks.

Without going into detail on each wire, the problem is that I have to wire the harness up to the control box and ingnition key but the spade connections for the electric shift and the screw lugs for connecting to the ignition, along with a few other spade and screw lug connections on the control box, don't fit any obvious pattern so I have no idea what goes where, apart from battery, ground, and start wires.

I can probably work most of it out with continuity and voltage testers and a bit of luck, but I'm worried I'll fry the expensive bits if I don't know what goes where before I start experimenting.

Keep in mind that a 1971 60 hp is not electric shift, its hydro-electric.

Good luck!

Dhadley

I don't understand the difference. I thought it was just an electric shift with energised coils operating forward and reverse gears. Where does the hydro bit come in?

Would you know whether there is a default setting in forward gear when there is no electric power? This one (which I've never seen running or with electric power through it) is in forward. I can't find anything in my Clymer manual about it, not that that is unusual.

Theres a big difference in the way the two work. The straight electric shift lower will be in neutral when there is no power to either wire. Power to one is forward. Power to the other is reverse. There is never power to both. Therefore there are major differences in the shift switches although they look the same.

Your unit shifts on hydraulic pressure. Power to the solenoids routes the fluid. No power to either wire means the unit is in forward. Power to one (green I believe -- dont quote me) is neutral with the motor running. (The motor has to be running for the hydraulic pump to operate.) Power to both the green and blus wire is reverse.

The correct fluid must be used also.

Good luck!

Dhadley

Thanks for that.

I hadn't got that far in the manual yet. I wasn't going to worry about the gears until I managed to get it wired up and running.

After having a quick look at the manual, I'm wondering if maybe there's plenty to worry about in the gearcase?

Looks like there's lots of things that can go wrong, compared with my basic old '67 V4 60HP with manual gears which I've just rebuilt, including recutting the forward clutch dog and mating surface on forward gear.

I like things that are simple, as there's fewer things to go wrong and they're easier to fix.

Did my '71 model have problems with the shift or gears, or anything else like the CD ignition?

In my opinion the hydro-electric gearcase was one of the simplest designs OMC came up with. Others will tell you its the most complicated. I thought so too when they came out. Once you understand the operating principles its real simple.

The downside is that they havent produced that unit since 1972. Parts are scarce and expensive. Of cource none of that matters until it breaks.

I would suggest getting a factory manual. Its very specific to your motor.

Good luck!
