Re: Wiring diagrams just are not correct

Joe, I believe for my motor you have posted the right, diagram. I did find that first issue was sold the wrong rectifier. The one I was sold was a 4 wire, seems mine needs to be a 3 wire. My original one was burnt so bad I couldnt tell.

I did message you Joe, there is one issue there is a larger guage wire, red in color, and a purple wire. (two purples on my engine.) One of the purple has a shield around it looks like it comes from the VRO pump, ultimately after it goes into a plug.

wiring theory.jpg

What a fricking nightmare this has turned out to be, OK I wired just about every configuration I could think could be right and none are.

At least nothing happenes when I turn the key over. I am wondering if the terminal block is just a place for wires to be connected? If it serves another purpose, say it connects wires that have no jumpers. Why would the diagram show a wire going to one of the tabs on the terminal block with no other wire and no jumper on that set. Like the Purple, and the Purple and Red wires?

Re: Wiring diagrams just are not correct

Full page wiring diagram sent as promised. Be extremely cautious about guess work and electrical wiring..... one slight mistake can be quite expensive. You now have my email address via the attachment email I sent...... take a bunch of pictures of your questionable wiring and send them to me.

Terminal Strip Wiring:

NOTE: If new Rectifier has 2 Yellow wires instead of 1 Yellow, 1 Yellow/Gray.... one Yellow attaches to #1 terminal, the other Yellow attaches to #3

#1 = Yellow Wires

#2 & #3 have a jumper between them:
#2 = Gray
#3 = Yellow/Gray

#4 & #5 have a jumper between them:
#4 = Red
#5 = Nothing (No Wires Here)

#6 = Purple/Red (12v exists here always) No other wires attach here. Voltage is either for other models using the same engine wiring harness or for accessories to be added at a later date.

#7 = Purple (12v when key is set to ON or START) No other wires attach here. Voltage is either for other models using the same engine wiring harness or for accessories to be added at a later date.

Does this solve any problems?

Thanks Joe, I did get those, I am starting to think I might have some other issue as well as the rectifier burning out. Something must have burnt it out.

Would the power tilt and the vro be considered extras? If so that would explain the extra red and extra purple wires.

Re: Wiring diagrams just are not correct

I have a 1987 70 hp apart here at my shop. I would think the wiring should be the same...I have a factory manual at home( but all week I am house sitting my gf's farm)

on the bracket all this stuff is bolted to I can see on my motor( looked like a well used and played with motor) the red w/purple stripe wire the thick red wire and the red wire from the RECT-reg all attach at the same spot on the buss bar!!.

the gray from the harness is jumped ( with a special peice of metal on the buss bar) to the yell w greay stripe coming from the rectifier. The solid yellow goes to its own screw but since it is loose i imagine somethign else attached there as well.

a burnt rect-regulator should not prevent you from starting the motor!!!

I had one go bad and all it seem to do it not charge my battery and my tach didnt work..

the motor ran fine otherwise.

so i really think you have other issues, of course it could be related to how you are attaching wires!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

tonight i can look in my manual..

Re: Wiring diagrams just are not correct

See now that is toatally different. I guess I need to find out which wires go together. I can get the boat to start if I cross a couple wires but I know it is not correct because the power trim does not work without the key on in that situation.

I guess I could live with that but I hate to run the boat with the wiring incorrect.

Did you see Joes wiring diagram? It makes sense except for it does not show the extra wires which I am believing now are the power trim and the vro. This also makes sense because I am sure the motors are not built with those features on, they are probably added later. The power trim has a red/purple wire and a thicker red wire. The VRO is a purple wire.

Re: Wiring diagrams just are not correct

ok , home now, I have a 1989 manual apparently...and a 1988 70 hp.

NOT 100% sure they are the same as you motor..

manual says 60-70 hp 3 cyliner models only...which inclued a 65 hp unit as well.the wiring digrams seperate the motors into a few groups

65 hp RS with AC has its own

the 60-70 EL models have one
the 60-70TL models have theirs
and the 60-70 TTL modelas have their own.

the reg-rectifiers have different wiring !!!!!!!!!!!! the TTL model has four wires, the others have only THREE..plus the buss bar is wired totally different for all three models!!

the rectifier is the same on the 86 and the 89 models....doesnt seem to be called a regulator ..just rectifier.

the only way the trim unit can come into play with your set up not starting-starting ...that i can tell is if you have the wires to the buss bar mixed up.

the stator wires run to the buss bar and the TNT power runs to the bar...maybe they are touching.

if you need any specific info from the manual let me know...i am betting many things are the same between 1986 and 1989.

Re: Wiring diagrams just are not correct

Guys, another great mystery solved right here on the forums. I have to hand it to you all it was a culmination that got it, but I think the one that best fit my boat was the diagram Joe posted. Not that the others were not correct, it seems that with these boat companies (alot like a couple I have worked for in the past) they will use what they have to get the motors built.

I worked for Luhrs Mainship Corporation and Gemini Boats and I have see that happen numerous times. Just try to find a wiring diagram for a Luhrs! lol

Anyway thanks a million for everyones help, I guess I will be back on the water this weekend!

Bob these are really good diagrams, where did you get this type?
