Re: wiring for dummies

Does the motor have a 12/24 switch on it or is it a 24V only motor? It makes a difference. We need to know how many wires come from the motor to the plug. If its a 24V only motor there will be only two wires in the motor harness. If its a 12V and 24V there will likely be three wires in that harness (Red, Orange, and Black or White).

24V ONLY: BAT 1 POS to BAT 2 NEG. BAT 2 POS to Red wire in plug. BLACK (or white) wire in plug goes to BAT 1 NEG. In this configuration the batteries are in series and only two pins on the connector are used.

12 AND 24V: Same as above, but connect the ORANGE wire from the plug to BAT 1 POS. In this configuration the red wire feeds 24V to the motor. If you switch to 12V the orange wire feeds 12V.

Re: wiring for dummies

sorry not sure what im doing in trying to post reply .first thank you for the help. the trolling motor is 24v only . there are only 2 wires coming from the foot pedal.i steered you wrong in the original post . the plug from the trolling motor looks like there are 3 copper sleeves in the 4 holes .
i think you are telling me to hook them in( series ). my boat has 2 seperate compartments for 1 battery per . the 4 wires go back to the recepticle. 1 orange/1 red/ 2 blacks . the compartments are about 3 ft apart . 1 on the upper deck and 1 on the main . my question would be how to accomplish this in a neat manner ?

Re: wiring for dummies

Does the panel that receptacle sit on also have a 12/24 switch?. For purposes of this discussion, I'll assume it doesn't. There a couple of ways to do this wiring. One requires that you cut the orange wire close to the receptacle and reroute it to the other battery. This obviously makes the jack no longer useable for a 12/24 motor. Therefore I'll explain how to do this leaving everything in tact.

Connect the RED wire from the receptacle to the POSITIVE terminal on the battery that cable is rounted to (call it BAT #1). Connect the BLACK wire from the receptacle to the NEGATIVE terminal on the battery in the other compartment (call it BAT #2). Now you need to run a wire from the POSITIVE terminal on BAT #2 over to the NEGATIVE terminal on BAT #1. Use the same size or larger wire as the others. You will not use the ORANGE wire and one of the BLACK wires so tape them up and stow them out of the way. Lastly, make sure the POSITIVE (RED) and NEGATIVE (BLACK) wires on your trolling motor plug match the RED and BLACK pins in the receptacle. For safety purposes, you should add a fuse or circuit breaker at the RED/POSITIVE terminal on BAT #1. Go fishing. Post back if there indeed is a 12/24 switch on the receptacle panel.

Re: wiring for dummies

yes it is a 12/24 v switch . after posting a reply to you yesterday i went back out and lucked out . the battery wires ran just ahead of the console and behind the livewell . i ran a piece of 12 gauge wire along the others and was able to fish the end out with a coat hanger . reason this was so lucky i only had about a 1/2 inch of sight to see to the bottom of the boat thru the hole the battery wires came out . i wanted to do as you suggested anyway and not mess anything up on the boat. im going to get a piece of wire today and finish the project .once again , thanks for the help and quick response .

Re: wiring for dummies

is single o too big to run between batteries ? (copper). its at least 2 times bigger than whats in there . long range plan is to install onboard charger .

Re: wiring for dummies

silvertip, nice explanation! mrpkd, you aren't using 12 gauge wire to run the motor are you? Is the rest of the trolling motor wiring 12 gauge? That sounds pretty small for a trolling motor.

Re: wiring for dummies

Hold on here. This is what gets posters mad at us when things don't go right because we don't get the full story. Lets start over:
1) How many pins are in the receptacle (three or four). Not spaces -- the actual number of pins. If you have two wires from each battery space there normally is four pins.
2) Are you certain the switch on the panel is labeled 12V and 24V?
3) Does that switch have any other positions or markings?
4) Do not wire anything until you answer these questions.

Re: wiring for dummies

4 pins but once again
switch is definitly labled 12/24 v
red and black top 2 pins
orange and black bottom 2 pins
the switch also has toggle to raise and lower motor

Re: wiring for dummies

where i might be confusing things is that the plug from the trolling motor has 4 holes but it only looks like they have copper linings in three of them.
with an ohm meter (ground side ) i get a beep in 2 holes
but no beep on other side.

Re: wiring for dummies

im not using 12 gauge wire / only used to pull (4 guage) wire back thru from bat 1 to bat 2 for connection between bat 1 neg and bat 2 pos.

Re: wiring for dummies

OK. Your trolling motor is capable of running on 12V or 24. One more question -- is there a 12/24 switch on the trolling motor or it's foot pedal? If there is we need to discuss some options. If there is no 12/24 switch on the motor all you need to do is run the red and black wires from the receptacle to one battery. Run the orange and black wires from the receptacle to the other battery. The 12/24 switch will feed either 12 volts to the motor via the orange and black wires, or 24 volts via the red wire battery #1 and the black wire on battery #2. The jumper we had previously discussed is not necessary as the switch does that function, Simple setup. Then go fishing.,
