Re: wiring harness 1974 85 hp outbard

I don't think a video would show anything , it is very slight so it is more of a feel thing at the same point in the rotation 180 * each time
When I put the crankcase cover back on it gets worse , does not feel like it is hitting on any hard part only like resistance , so now I'm thinking a bearing must be causing this drag feel
Looking for someone local to check it out and not charge me $100's to findout the crank is bent and the motor is junk
I would spend a few $ to get the rotating parts smooth running

Re: wiring harness 1974 85 hp outbard

Ok found a shop and took power pack in , he could not see anthing wrong maybe a little nick on #1 cylinder wall looking from the tranfer side
Told me to take the crank out and check for broken ring or ?
Took out the crank and everything looks good other than some carbon build up on the tops of the pistons , very small amount
There is no way I can put this back ( I have no way to compress the rings ) so I guess it is back to the shop and have this guy check it out again
and install crank
I have done several VW motors and have never run accross something like this where you just don't see the cause

Re: wiring harness 1974 85 hp outbard

back to shop today and it seems this guiy doesn't want to work on this as He wanted $300 just to hone on cyclinder and put the crank back in
I can do the hone , but putting the crank back in ??? I have read several post about how to do it with out the Mercury ring compressors , but not sure how this will work with out some help
any videos out there to show it done ( looked at youtube but must be missing them)

Oh and I still did not see anything that could be causing this

Larry, I used to separate the rods from the crank, put the bearings and cages in numbered paper cups to keep then separate and then install each piston, one at a time. Now coat the rod bearing surfaces with grease and stick the roller bearings and cages in one by one. It takes a long time, but it works. Don't mix up the bearings between rods. Observe the match marks on the rods and rod caps.

Yahoo , I just kept trying with the fingers and rocking things around and got it down , then something not right so pulled it back up and checked all the rings again this time it droped down easier . Put a few botls in and she truns over good
Did not ever see anything really that would cause the drag feeling , but I took a slight hone to all cyclinders and cleaned up what carbon I saw in the cylinders and put it back
Lots of work before I know if this is a good motor but happy to get this far
Bought the big book so going to do some things before I put the power pack back on
Clean carbs as they are easy to access now change all fuel hose
put an impeller on the lower unit before it goes back
Fix the stator wires and harness

Reading in the manual it talks about shims to control crank moving from front to back , I did not see any shims when unit was taken apart
That could have been an issue ? Looks like I have some more reading to do

There may be a brass shim (looks like a gasket) under the upper end cap. That would center crank in the connecting rod journals. That is the only shim I can remember.

Well I don't have anything that looks like a gasket or a shim on upper or lower end caps
I also don't seem to have much if any side movement in the crank
should the cork gaskets be replaced or can I reuse them ? I was going to use gasket chich , stuff I use on VW cases to put the block and cover together would that be ok ?

I used permetex non-hardening sealer on the crankcase cover, and reused the cork gaskets.

Re: wiring harness 1974 85 hp outbard

thanks Chris 1956
I will use my gasket sinch on that then also but some oil on the o rings and some sealer on the end caps
with that I can start putting her back together
I guess before I go to far the carbs could use a quick clean as they are easy access now
Is it Ok to try the compression test with the power head on a bench before I put all back onto the boat ?
