This is a case of the typical, 'turn the key and nothing happens' problem! Originally thought it was the starter solenoid, its not. I found that the ground which runs to the solenoid is bad, so that's replaced. Still nothing at the positive terminal of the starter solinoid. I then followed the wire "upstream" and tested for power at the big red plug. couldn't get the test light to 'light up' on all terminals at the big red plug while someone else was turning the key to "start". I just figured test all the terminals at the red plug bc I was unsure which one was the "start" wire. My questions are....
1- if I'm not getting power at any of the terminals on the big red plug then the ignition switch is bad, right?
2- is there any way to test the ignition switch if I pull it out?
3- anyone have a wiring diagram for the ignition switch? the motor is not original to the boat, originally it had a 97 evinrude 50hp and the mechanic that installed the '77 had to put a different switch in the console, yet he reused all of the wiring that ran from the console to the motor.
A few more details...
the tach and fuel gauge were going 'in and out' last weekend when we had it on the water. now when you turn the key to "on" nothing happens with them.
when the key is "on" and you push it in to engage the choke solenoid, it doesn't engage.
