I have got my recently acquired Ev 40 rigged up in the boat with all controls working fine except for the wiring .The motor came with a switch and wire harness. All the wires were marked,ie solenoid main top left, top right etc got those connected up and she started and ran like a Rolex. My problem is with the last wire marked "killswitch"
No problem,I hear you say.Well, this motor does not have a kill switch. It does have the vacuum cutout on the starboard side and a safety switch under the armature plate but I don't know where to connect this final wire and I can't figure out how it works anyway.
Presumably it is operated by the ignition switch but being mindful of the dire consequences of accidentally putting 12 V through the coils I'm reluctant to do it without expert advice. My undying gratitude awaits anyone who can put me right.
Thanks Geoffwga1

You could install a killswitch with a safety lanyard that clips to your belt, that way if you get thrown overboard the engine stops.
Or just tape the wire up and live dangerous like I do.:)
I'll swim home, don't need no stinkin boat.

Actually, there should be two "kill" wires coming down from under the flywheel. They attach to the points and when touched together, they ground out the points and kill the engine. They are normally attached to the "M" terminals on the back of the ignition switch. When you turn the key off, the circuit closes and the engine shuts down.

Re: Wiring prob on 72 40hp EV

Hi lindy46. Yes I understand the principle involved,my problem is just where does the second wire connect to.I have one of the other wires marked "magneto"with a patent connector on the end. This is connected to a short wire from the armature plate via the other side of the connector. This is presumably one side of the "kill" circuit. What I need to know is where does the one from the key switch connect to the armature plate? the manual is not very clear on this but it looks as though the wire from the switch is attached to the center terminal on the vacuum switch . would this make sense?I've just been out to check, the terminals are marked as follows M S C B M I.The wire to the magneto is connected to the M terminal. My loose wire is connected to the C terminal. There is a link from the vacuum switch that joins the magneto wire into the a/ plate so my guess is that my spare wire goes to the same terminal on the vacuum switch.I know I'm banging on a bit here but I just want to be sure.

Maybe to GROUND to ground it out?

Yes it runs from one of the "M" terminals on the ignition switch and attaches to the vacuum cut-out switch, and then there should be a second wire connected to the same cut-out switch terminal going under the armature plate to the second set of points. The other wire goes directly from the other "M" terminal to the other set of points.

Thanks guys.I've connected it to the vacuum switch and when i short across the terminals on the switch the engine stops.,which indicates to me that either the switch is faulty or it's the wrong switch for the job.Thank you for your help and patience.
