i am installing a mercury tachometer on my 1987 evinrude 90 hp and found the following information posted here on a previos forum with regards to the wiring color codes.

"grey=sensor
black=grd
purple=switched 12vdc

Your controller may have a three pin plug ... a mating harness is available from any BRP Evinrude dealer. "

I found the three pin plug they mentioned (it was disconnected) however in the parts diagram it says that its for the oil pump. The only gray wire from the harness goes to that plug. Theres a brown and a beige wire that goes to the alarm i beleive. So i guess thats the gray wire i use for the tach sensor? Any help would be appreciated.

You should have a something that looks like this:

OMC Ignition sw overallSwitch.jpg

It's not clear where you're finding the wires with colors you mention, but they are not the colors for tach connections. The tach really only needs the gray and black wires connected to work. The tach harness plugs in right at the controller and does, in fact have black, grey and purple wire colors connected to it's three pins.

Re: wiring tachometer

thanks jim now i see. im just gonna cut the connector off and just run the wires straight i dont have the tach connector male side (probably comes with it if u buy an evinrude tach. the problem is i bought the mercury tach to match my other gauges which all worked fine so far. I read in a previous thread to set the knob on the back of the tach to 6. Thats what im going to do if thats not correct somebody please stop me .Next up is the water temperature gauge and after opening the box it looks a bit complicated since all the instructions are written for mercurys. Any comments or help is appreciated ..

Re: wiring tachometer

You can get the mating tach harness with connector at a BRP dealer. It will have enough wire to go right to the tach. This piece came with the controller when new. I don't think it comes with BRP tachs.

i think im just gonna cut off the connector from the harness and crimp the wires i dont see why that would cause a problem unless i wanted to unplug it. i dont see that mating tach harness in the parts diagram in the ignition section. maybe its on the controller side diagram?. I still am wondering why it said oil pump connector for #25 on the diagram and not tach connector from this diagram actually now that i see maybe thats not it? Its supposed to have the 3 wires which i identified on my harness. in the picture theres only 1.
