Wiring tower speakers

Might be kind of a dumb question, but I've never had to do this before. I'm about to wire two tower speakers into my boat. It already has 4 speakers in it. Can I just hook the tower speakers into the front or rear leads in the stereo deck along with the existing ones, or do I have to get an amp or some other type of equipment in order to run 6 speakers?

Its my gut instinct that says no. However, technically it all depends on the Ohm ratings of your speakers and how they are wired.

I woul assume you have a 4 chanel head unit, and 4 in boat speakers... one on each channel. Most likely all are 4 Ohm.

So, you can wire the tower speakers in series on the head unit, but they wont be ver loud that way... wiring in paraell will probably cook your internal Amp... unless the system is made to handle 2 ohm loads or your tower speakers are 8 ohms.

It would be easiest to wire in an amp and use that, plus you want your tower speakers to be LOUD... as you want to hear them 60' behind your boat.

Thanks Kyle, that's what I was afraid of. Definitely don't want to sacrifice volume when I hook them up. I was hoping to avoid having to get an amp (extra cost, battery drain etc.) but that's probably what I'll end up having to do.
