Hey guys have Chapperal with a 63 40hp Johnson eletramatic and I am trying to find out how the wiring goes. I have a manual but it doesnt show me the color of the wires. So what I am looking for is I have 4 wires that were not hooked up when I got the boat. 2 are 16 gauge black ones 1 grey 16g and 1 Brown that is a 10 or 12g. I dont know where these should go but it doent have the generator on it but I have one coming. Thanks and any help would be great.

Re: Wiring???

are you talking about motor wiring or boat accessory wiring. should be totally separate. system, running of the same battery.

Re: Wiring???

It is the harness that comes from the motor to the front. Ignition switch wire and wondering what the others are???? Thanks

Re: Wiring???

Those to 16 ga black wires may be the points killer wires. See if they trace to a place under the flywheel. The thicker wire may be from the generator to the voltage regulator. Those motor had the old mechanical voltage regulator (shaped like a small loaf of bread). Those motors were also wired with a ammeter on the dashboard as well as an overheat light on the dash. There was a sensor on the head which grounded the wire when the motor overheated. since you have the electric shift, do you have the wires for that squared away?

You might get a better response in the Johnson Motor Repair forum. Joe Reeves is an expert and resides there.
