Re: Wisconsin Deer Gun Hunt

Thanks ALL and hope all having a great hunt! I have decided to have a shoulder mount done. I may never see or shoot a better buck in my lifetime. Hopefully my Son, Daughter, brother Tim, or our friend John may.

Stats: ten points, 20 inch outside spread, 12 inch inside front tines, average tine length of the longer are 6 inches or so. The buck weighed 200 pounds field dressed. Weighed the whitetail today in the AM. Most likely 225-230 or so on the hoof.

Am amazed I had the luck being in the right place at the right time...what a rush! :)

Here's my prize from opening day. It was about 4:45 and getting dark real fast when it walked in front of me at 100 yds. Hunting in the DEZ zone means getting the head taken away by the DNR anyways so it doesn't really pay to shoot a wall hanger, plus I don't eat horns. DNR sharpshooters shot 90 deer in the adjacent sq. mile section last year so any deer is a good deer. I get to hunt till March 31, 2006 so if it's brown it's down.

PJC, Bet the shack was rocking after your hunt and a few Jagermeisters were raised and consumed in celebration.

Re: Wisconsin Deer Gun Hunt

Congratulations wildbill59! Your a brave man taking a white tail at dusk! I have not, mostly because not wanting to dress out in the low light. I am out of the stand by 3pm or so at the latest. Or to watch a Packer game. Lazy hunter disease :)

No Jagermeisters, but I did have a fifth of Yukon Jack on hand. And I did warm up with a portion of that fifth. Celebrating the Random Luck that was given to me.

My Brother Tim and our Friend John kicked into high gear hoping to have another Buck come around. Next year I hope for them.

Congrats again wildbill!

Re: Wisconsin Deer Gun Hunt

I get a lot of my deer right at dusk when they move around to bed down. The deer moved into a field on the edge of the thicket which for a minute or so gave me the time I needed. It all depends on the area you hunt I guess. I'm one of those that doesn't give up on anything until the fat lady sings. I was sitting there smoking my Swisher Sweet and decided to finish it and then go. I really don't like gettin up in the morning anyways. One opening day I was walking to my stand and the sun was coming up in the east and there were 2 deer standing in front of me. Even though it was probably 10-15 minutes before offical time the big buck offered a perfect, safe shot. What scared me was the fireball that came out of my 30-06 and the deer running right at me.

Very nice Buck PB! I see ten points in your photo. Long brow and beam tines too!

I see you prefer camo blaze as I do. I believe it is still safe, and breaks up the hunters silhouette. Thanks for posting PB. :)

Well its the last day of rifle season here in upstate NY (northern tier). I've been out about 6 times with no luck. I will sit in my chair in the woods this afternoon for an hour or two and give it one last go. Its kind of funny the way I hunt these days with my RA. I have to take my phone with me in case I shoot a deer and need help or fall down and can't get up. I don't go much over 100 yards from my truck and if I can't drive to it I can't shoot it.

Well I went to my "chair in the woods" about 2:45 this afternoon and didn't even sit down yet when out pops this deer. I put my scope on it and I'll be darned, a small crotch buck or maybe a 5 pointer. I watched it come closer and then wander off. I just got seated nicely and here comes another deer. This time a spike buck with about 1 1/2 inch spikes. I watched him come to within 20 yards of me before he decided he didn't like me and trotted off. I didn't shoot a buck this year but at least I finally seen a couple of bucks that may be shooters next year.

Terrible hunting results here in VT. I went out and saw quite a few does, a spikehorn and a 500lb moose but, there is always next year.

Here is a quote from our local paper:
The 2005 buck kill continues to run way below the average for the last three years.

As of Nov. 30, the last harvest report issued by the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department, 2,528 bucks had been reported. The average harvest for the last three years, for the same period, was 4,891 antlered deer.

Last year, deer hunters shot a total of 5,589 bucks during the 16-day season, the second-lowest kill in Vermont in 57 years. Biologists said they anticipated a lower buck kill this season because of the first-ever moratorium on spikehorn bucks.
Does not help the tourist industry either.

Bob

Re: Wisconsin Deer Gun Hunt

Just got back after 7 days of hunting. Have 4 more to go, but decided to take today off. Only saw one shooter, and he didn't give me a shot - only saw his nose, 2 eyes, the brow times, and the base of the rack - one brow tine was forked - looked like a great rack and an old deer, but no good shot. Saw a couple of spikes, Not even a good clean shot at a doe so far. Used to seeing 15 - 30 deer a day. Have gone 3 days without seeing a hair. A couple of other days with only seeing two, and 2 days where I saw a nice herd, but couldn't shoot.

Gotta get a lot done so I can get out there the rest of the week. Saturday is the last day.

Speck you just got to love these new regulations that are in place. IMHO it is really hurting the general population of deer especially in the northern sections of the state. Ironically the dum dum that put it into place no longer works for the state.
