Hi Guys,

I am new in the Outboard world and plan to buy a used boat.

I would like to know which of these 2 engines is the more reliable? Or should be the best buy.

Merc 65hp 1979 or Evin 60hp 1982.

Also what should I look at or test before to buy it?

Thanks for your help, Martin

You knew two attractive women 26-28 years ago. Which one is better looking today?

There is no way to give you an answer with any credibility.

Well, find out what year the Merc really is. In 1979 there wasn't a 65hp

Neither of those engines is it's actual horsepower, in todays standards. Each was powerhead rated. Prop ratings started with 1983 models.

Both are serviceable. Before you buy either, get compression readings.

The '79' 60 HP was a two cylinder. Not a big fan of those. The Merc was a three cylinder.

That info. is from a dedicated John/Rude guy. Take that for what it is worth.

If the Merc was in salt water, take the Johnson.

The last year merc made a 4 cylinder 65 was in 1971, in 72 they introduced a 3 cylinder 65 which somewhere around 77 or 78 became a 70hp, and in 1984 it became a prop rated 60hp

thanks Guys,

I talked with the Merc65hp seler and he confirm the year (79)

Anyway as the engine is a 3 cyl it should be a 72-77 as you said.

Now he told me that some time the engine will cut or stop when you push it at full thruttle  Same time he said he has a second Merc65 for spare parts he could put in the deal.

Am I planning to buy troubles?

A brief check indicates Evinrude 2 cyl 60 80-85 3 cyl. 70-71 87.
Merc 65 4 cyl 63-71,72-76 3 cyl 72-76 Of course I may have missed some.
only checked years around those indicated.

The 3-cylinder Merc 65s are considered to be among Mercury's WORST motors ever - and that's coming from guys who LIKE Mercs...

As for the E60hp, they're not too bad. A little shaky at idle (big bore, two cylinder characteristic) but decent performers overall. Very good on gas. Parts availability is good, and probably a shade or three better than the Merc in that aspect. I'd go with the Evinrude...

2 carbs feeding 3 cylinders not one of their better ideas. Ranks right up there withe direct reversing models. I too like mercs, owned them and OMC, prefered them in the 70s and early to mid 80s.
