Hey guys, I have a 1984 Evinrude 15hp manual start (E15RCRM) model outboard.
Questions:

- With modifications can manual start outboard charge a battery(used for trolling and lights)?
- Is it costly ?
- How can it be done and what parts do I need?

Your time and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Re: With Modifications can manual start outboard charge a battery??

A lot of sailor models come with both electric start and manual start, and an alternator. So: Yes, it is possible to charge a battery from a modified manual start engine. HOWEVER: The alternator output is so low that it will never recharge a discharged trolling battery. It was designed mainly to replace power used in starting the engine.

If you are expecting to use it for extended fishing trips, you would be better off buying a small gas powered generator and charge the batteries overnight.

Alot of outboards can be fitted with a charging kit (which usually comes standard with electric start outboards). The cost varies wildly by manufacturer, year, model, etc.

The output wouldnt be enough to charge a flat battery, but it will keep a starting battery topped up between startings, and run your lights and accessories.

Would I be able to find the charging kit on Iboats???

Thanks cajuncook:D
