Wlii no gear lube cause the waterpump not to work?

I was wondering this because I tried out a Force 50 hp, outboard a while ago and didn't see any water coming out of the pee holes so I figured the pump was shot. About a week later I checked the gear oil level in the lower unit and none came out of the fil/drain hole when I removed the plug. Would this in any way cause the waterpupm/impeller not to work and if so, would it reverse itself after filling the lower unit?

Oil in the L/U has nothing to do with the water pump.

But it does have a lot to do with the lifespan of the lower unit! Get some oil in there!

In a round about way it has a lot to do with your water pump, if you run the motor with out any lube in the LU then when it sezes up the shaft wont turn to make the water pump work.

Of course, the engine wont turn either, so it won't need any cooling! ;)
