So I live in the desert and it has been over 100 degrees here for the last week and a half and it shows in my lawn. So yesterday evening I mowed my lawns and had a yellow spot in my back lawn so I decided to turn the hose on and leave it there for 15 minutes like I normally do. Well I forgot about it until this morning when I let the dogs out and all you could see was my patio deck, the rest was water probably 2-3 inches deep across my whole yard. I almost grabbed the fishing gear and set up a lawn chair but I had to get to work. This is gonna be one expensive water bill but I am sure the lawn will look good. Wow I feel like an idiot.

Depending on the water bill, might be a cheap way to get waterfront property!:D

My father in law asked me to water his yard while he was on vacation once. I did something similar to what you did. He now asks his other son in law to water lawn when he goes on vacation. Come to think of it, he usually dosn't tell me about his vacations until he returns ..... hmmm.

Somebody must have opened the flood gate while I was at work because I only came home to a bunch of mud, I was hoping for a nice afternoon on my own private lake.:)

Don't feel too bad. A friend called me once and asked if I would check on his sprinkler system. Before going on vacation, he wanted to make sure the yard got a good watering before he turned the system off. He's cheap and feared the system would break or not turn off while he was away, so he always turns the controller to "manual - on" for about 20 minutes and then "off" before leaving town. Except this time, he forgot to turn it off. It was in "manual - on" and had been for 3 days straight. Water on the island seems to be charged by the drop and more expensive than gold. Needless to say, his water bill was huge.

I think if you call the water company and say your pipe was broken or something close to it. They will prorate the charges so your bill wouldn't be as much.

Years ago, I had a broken pipe and the water was running under ground. Huge bill, the water company noted excessive amount used. Checked and found the leak. The water company charged me for only the "average" use and credited the excess.
