I have an 1969 evinrude 85 with a wierd electrical problem. The engine has an automobile coil, and has ran fine for two seasons. This year she beagan to miss/bogg irratically. i wiggled the key switch while going about 20 mph accedentally turned it all the way off and lowe an behold it picked up speed and ran fine with the key off. iff i turn it back to the on position it will miss again? after checking the points condenser plugs and wires"all fine" a test run in barrel does same thing. plus it wont die! with key I had to choke it .
Help! please.
Thanks Dan in Cleveland

Re: won't die!

Check voltage to the input side of coil. Sounds like you need a new key sw. If it runs better when you wiggle, you maybe are making "good" contact and correcting the bad running condition.

Re: won't die!

Somebody replaced the amplifier and original coil with automotive coil, replace the switch as sounds if it has shorted internally.. the original coil will not help you..

Re: won't die!

Thanks for the replies yall, I guess you all know I'll start with the key switch as it is much less expensive than an amp and coil. p.s. while poking around under the dash i found that the blocking diode had been cut out and wire nutted back together. I hope the shop can sell a new one of those.
Ill post the rsults of the repair
Thanks again, and dont hold back any info, I need all the help I can get
