wont fire

hello every one. im looking for some help with why my motor wont fire.
1979 55hp evinrude
we were out the other day and she just died. we got back home and i tried to turn her over and she turned over but no fire. could get it to run for around 5 seconds if i use choke.
i thought ild try to fix it with the process off elimation
so far ive put in a new fuel diaframe and checked fuel pump all good.
put in a new fuel line cause i noticed a little pin hole.
ive pulled the carbys to peices cleaned them out with a air compresser and they seem to working fine.
while carbys where off thought it might have been the reed's but it's getting fuel past there no worries.
today i pulled the top round peice off the motor and cleaned in under with a bit of emery paper.
done a copresion test and was about 125psi. is that right.
ive put it back together now and set it at top dead centre
and wondering how to i set the controls and timing. i dont have a timming light either.
once its set im hopping it will run right because all it used to do is turn over and only fire if you used the choke. to me it seemed it was starving it's self but its getting fuel.
im saving for a manual for it at the moment so i can see if it will help me.
and i guess how do i do this with ear muffs on and also in container of water in the back yard.

Re: wont fire

Installing control cables.

1. set controls in neutral and at idle.

2. manually make sure motor is in neutral and at idle.

3. on the motor end of the cable, is a trunion nut (adjustment nut) there is a retainer, on
the motor for the trunion nut remove the clip.

4. without moving anything on the motor, adjust the trunion nut (turning nut) so that
The nut sits in the retainer, and will connect to the motor.

5. connect the cable to the motor, reinstall the retainer clip.

Note: you adjust the cable to the motor, not the motor to the cable.
