My engine ran fine one time and the next time I tried to run it it would not get up on step. I have replaced all fuel lines and filters and I still have the same problem. It will run fine under no load.

lastchance,

Give us a little more to go on. Engine type, hp, year, etc.

Have you checked spark? Perhaps you have a cylinder dropping out under load.

lastchance

how long did the motor set between use, sounds like it could be bad gas or the carbs need cleaned.

Lastchance.

You are probably down a cylinder. Could be fuel/carb or could be ignition.

"Running fine under no load" is an outboard's favorite lie. They can sound fine on one cylinder.

Tell us what engine you have and we'll have you back in operation quickly. :)

Re: won't get up on step

I had a very similar engine with a very similar problem. I tried quite a few things, plugs, fuel, cleaned carbs, fiddled with timing. Only once did I get to to go halfway nice, it ran boggy on acceleration, and finally picked up the next cylinder and the next... But after some more farting around I gave up as I discovered a little lateral play right on the flywheel. I would reccomend cleaning the carbs and plugs, checking all aspects of timing and coils. It (kinda) worked for me.
Craig

Ahoy, Lastchance.

First, let's find out if the problem is fuel related or ignition related.

Crank her up. Carefully short out each sparkplug, one at a time. Your rpm should drop a bit when you kill a good cylinder.

If there is no change, you have a dead cylinder. Pull the plug wire and hold it about 1/2" to 3/4" from the block. You should get a hot, blue spark.
No spark? Ignition trouble.

If you have a dead cylinder with good spark, carb trouble.

Let us know what you find and we'll go to the next step.

Good luck. :)
