I had some problems today and replaced the water pump. Now it wont go into gear. So I took the lower unit back off and checked the gear stem thingy on the lower unit and it just spinns. What have I done? I didnt hit anything and dont know about spun prop, I hope that aint it.

just a guess, try turning the prop while turning the shift rod. not the drive shaft.

Re: Wont go into gear

I have no problem reinstaling the lower unit. The shift shaft on the lower unit will not engage the forward or reverse. the shaft just spinns. I looked in the manual and it seems to me that their is some sort of gear that may have fell off. Does anyone have any experience with what may be wrong. Thanks for your time and Happy Thanks Giving

Re: Wont go into gear

The other end of the shift shaft has a cam on it to cause the clutch dog (on the prop shaft) to move back and forth. The clutch dog sits between or is caused to move into the F and R gears which locks the prop shaft into the respective rotation by the indirect action of the shift shaft and the cam it sticks into.

The shift shaft is splined on the top (for the shift lever to operate it and the bottom where it inserts into the shift cam (in the lower unit oil filled cavity; right in front of the F gear/bearing assy).

If you can freely turn the shift shaft 360 degrees, which is what you indicated, you must have accidentally pulled the shift shaft out of the shift clutch and it can no longer function. There is supposed to be a clip under the shaft retainer (under the water pump) to keep the shaft from coming out till you remove the retainer.

Anyway , if that is what you did, you might try to restab it in the clutch if it hasn't moved. Tricky job since you not only are trying to find the center of it, but also trying to line up the splines.....also, there is spring pressure on it from the clutch dog shift spring, so it may be pushed forward where you can't get the shaft to line up with the hole in the cam.

If you can't do that, you will have to gut your gearbox to reconnect it as the clutch is at the very front of the gearbox. Very tricky process; not in disassembling the gearbox, but in reassembly as you have shims to line up in the driveshaft/propshaft and gear interface, and other problems that a professional, with the right tools and instruments should do for you. My opinion and I do 99% of my own work.

Course while he's in there he can go ahead and install new seals on all your shafts.

Wish you luck.

Do I need to remove the funky nut befor attempting this? The shaft also will slide up and down about 1 inch.s this normal. Im asking this because the shaft wont move side to side to find its hole.

I have a professional ready to look at it in the morning but I made a socket to fit this funky nut and was wondering if I can screw it up worse by removing this nut to try and stab it back into place.

Thanks for your reply Mark, very informative

Re: Wont go into gear

What is it about women and Thanksgiving. All that work and what a mess and they are totally pooped after it all and for what; 30 minutes of making a pig out of yourself. :%

Every year I ask the wife to go out for the occasion, but no, she has to invite the whole family over. Course Thanksgiving is THE day of the year for all the family to get together; seems it doesn't interfere with anyone's other activities, so I guess I will continue to loose this one.

Happy Turk day. Ours starts today when the rest of the chillins show up from out of town.

Nice pic of wife and cute kitchen pro, or cute wife and nice kitchen! :% Like the island and utensil rack over it; gotta be real handy.

Answering your question, sounds like you already pulled it out of the cam and the clip I was talkiing about is what's keeping you from pulling it all the way out. Like tas said, wait till tomorrow.

Re: Wont go into gear

Thanks she loves to cook.

Well I droped it off and what a bear it was to expose. He had to drill the exhaust nut ( the Big one) if thats the name. \
Did a complete tear down on the unit. Everything like the gears and shaft looked good but the shaft cam that was shattered.

He will be replacing all seals/sealkit, pressure test and fill with oil , and the shift cam that shattered. Total cost 400 bucks. I think thats almost a deal. What do others think

Re: Wont go into gear

That's a deal.

You did the right thing.

One reason Merc changed lower unit designs in the '80's was just that; you couldn't get the stupid nut off when you had to go in. Now it's a piece of cake.
