wont idle in water

i havea 1989 200mariner that will run and idle fine on the hose but once you put it in the water it wont ide or go it will keep shuting off you can start it and rev it up but it wont go once in gear if you keep trying and go wide open it will take off and run fine at high speeds but once you come back to idle it will shut off had carbs rebuilt its got a inline filter and a water seperator on it i cant figure it out mechanic said compression was good can you help ther arent no adjustments on the carbs

Make sure the motor is all the way down, especialy when starting..it seems the float on the carbs will stick if the motor is tilted on these older units when starting.
Next, when the motor is runnig try squeexing the bulb, if the motor starts running better you have a fuel issue, which I have found is the case 85% of the time.
In that case I would start by removing the screen filter on the bottom of the pickup tube in the gas tank and install an inline filter.
Next I would replace all fuel lines, the bulb and all fittings, including the one female connector that connects to the motor.
Also, I would rebuild the fuel pump if it hasnt been done in a while.
the kit is only about 5 dollars on I boats.

thanks i didnt know there was a screen in the tank. I will take the hose off tomorrow and check it and let you know.It does seem like fuel because when it shuts off you have to choke it to start it back up also at times the inline will run low on fuel.

Also might check the timing. Sounds like the primary pickup may be out of adjustment.

how do you check the timing i checked the fuel tank pick up it didnt have a screen on it im leaning towards timing because before i couldnt get it to start took it to this guy i know he said the timing was out the bolt was loose i think but i dont know how to check it
