im new to boating and im having trouble getting my boat to plane out !! its a 14 foot crestliner tri hull with a mercury 500 thunderbolt 50hp and a 12 pitch prop. a squirle got underneeth the floor and chewed up alot of the foam in the back end. should i replace it with that spray foam ? would that help me plane out or should i try something else? (ie diff prop or a hydrofoil) any help would be great!!
thanks

Re: wont plane

The foam wont effect the planning. You can start with a compression test of the motor and be sure you are firing on all cylinders.Next would try the prop.

Re: wont plane

are you sure you have an engine problem and not a boat problem. how did the squirrel get under the floor to chew up the foam. you could have water logged foam. thus making the boat heavier than it should be. give us some more info typr of boat, year, serial # off motor. any history you know. did you just get the boat etc. how has it been stored. so far with don't have much to work with.

Re: wont plane

The foam is only to keep the boat from sinking in the event it swamps.
Be sure the motor has good compression at least 100 lbs each cylinder.
And that it is running on all cylinders.
Also be sure the throttle is opening all the way.

Re: wont plane

theirs a cut out in the back end where the plug is thats where the critter got in. i bought the boat from my buddy and now he is in IRAC and i cant get a hold of him yet. the model of the boat is a muski 14 motor sn#4072280. i pulled the plugs and they all look the same so i dont think theirs a bad cylinder.who do i tell if the throtet cable is adjusted right?
thanks for your help

Re: wont plane

check the compression and post it. the plugs could look alike because a the cylinder could be low. no one said adjust the cable. with engine off put shifter in gear and pusg throttle all the way forward. now look into the carb and see if the throttle plates are open completely. post results. you are our eyes and ears. strongly suggest you invest in a engine specific merc service manual, and become very familar with it. is the load in your boat balanced, or is every one sitting in the back. if all the load is in the back, it may never plane.
