Hello all, new to the forum and looking for help withmy 1st starter boat.

Recently purchased a 1983 Baliner Capri with a Volvo Penta AQ125A/270. It starts fine if I short the starter solenoid but will not start from the ignition. Won't turn over at all.
Looking at the shop manual I was thinking it could be the starter assist relay. Does that sound right?

Also notice a 40 amp breaker on the engine but cannot locate in wiring digrams. Does anyone know what this is for?

Thanks for the help.

Re: won't start with ignition switch

idont know if this will hell or this is the wright way, but a guy from my marina was having the same problem this week, when turn the keys i get juice from the yellow starter wires, but just not reaching the starter solenoid, so i just run a new wire from the key switch straight to the solenoid and it start right up and running, with the keys everytime.

i told the guy to talk to his mechanic about it before he take the boat out, it was a 470 merc .do as don say and do it the right was .

I just had the same problem. fixed it on a Sunday with this relay from Rado Shack:

Not saying it's as good as one from the marine parts store but for $6.49 you can carry a few of them.

I've been having the same problem. In my case, I believe its the neutral safety switch in the shifter. check yours.

Re: won't start with ignition switch

If this is how you did it, you just bypassed your neutral start safety switch and the boat will now start in gear.

Look under the the panel where the shifter is. I'm going with it being a Neutral Safety Switch too.

Re: won't start with ignition switch

Thanks for all the advice, I replaced the relay and it's working fine.

Now on to all the other problems. After being a boat owner for 2 weeks I can see it is a very expensive hobby. My kayak is looking better and better.
