Re: wont start!!!!!?

But you don't give us any clues to go by. We don't have any way of knowing what is wrong. Repeating...have you checked the spark? Will it jump a 1/4" gap?

Have you checked the compression? We don't even know if you have a viable motor to work with. Was it running before you started replacing parts?

Go to the Engine FAQs Forum and do "Outboard won't start". Let us know what you find.

Re: wont start!!!!!?

Will this pic help? I believe your ignition should be the same as this one. There's only 2 wires on each coil. The short one goes under the right coil mounting screw, the long one goes to the points that go with that coil. The condenser wire goes to the points, too. If you have a kill switch, then the kill wire goes to the points as well, giving you a total of 3 wires (kill, coil, condenser) going to the points on a motor with kill switch, 2 wires (coil, condenser) for a motor without the kill switch. If you have a kill switch, disconnect those kill switch wires from the points and see if that gives you spark. Sometimes those kill switch wires get chaffed or cracked and short out the points. OR the kill switch could be bad. Cleaned the points? Just a fingerprint (I've been told) on the points can booger them up so you'll have no spark. You have to check that ignition step-by-step until you find your culprit that's causing no spark.
Either way, if it won't run, it's either spark or fuel. Have you tried spraying some fuel/oil mix in the carb throat and seeing if it'll crank? Definitely covered in the FAQ's.
Don't forget to do a search of the old threads, there's lots of good info there, too.
Good luck,
JBJ

Re: wont start!!!!!?

If your points are brand new, clean them with a paper towel to get any fingerprints and such off. Then put on the flywheel nut and use a wrench to turn the crankshaft so that the points cam rotates where the O in "TOP" is under the rubbing block of one set of points. Then use a feeler gauge to turn the adjustment screw until the gap between the contact points is .020 of an inch. Rotate the crank to the proper location and do the same to the other set of points. Are your plug wires new? If so, make sure they're in the coil properly.
If the wires aren't new, check for chaffing or cracks, and especially for corrosion at the tip of the wires. Cut off 1/2 inch of wire if you have to to get rid of any corroded wire and get to some good wire.
Also, make sure your coils are mounted flush to the mounting bosses or they'll rub on the flywheel. If you have a kill switch on your motor, I'd disconnect the kill switch wires from the points to see if that fixes your problem.
Hopefully you'll have good spark.
good luck,
JBJ

Re: wont start!!!!!?

Is your ignition different from the one I posted above?
If you click on the pic, it'll get bigger. I wrote some stuff about the coil wiring----short wire on top of coil on right mounting screw, long wire to points, that's it.
Good luck,
JBJ

Re: wont start!!!!!?

Look, people are very willing to help, but your one line answers are gettin old.

1. Did you set the points to be open 0.020" when the points cam is at the top position under the rubbing block of the points? The points cam rotates around, the point's rubbing block rides on the cam, and the points open and close as the cam lobe goes under them. You will get no spark if this is not right.
2. Does the black wire of the coil go under one of the coil mounting screws? This is the ground connection.
3. Does the green coil wire go to the points?
4. Does the black condenser wire also go to the points?
5. You have to put the flywheel back on before it will spark. Make sure none of the wires get in the way, and that the coils are aligned properly so they don't hit the flywheel.
6. If you're not familiar with outboards, get a factory manual. It will be the best money you've spent so far.

Re: wont start!!!!!?

sometimes a very small and simple problem is the cause of these things. You may want to check if you have the woodruff key in place and whether it holds the flywheel.
Don't ask me how I know this.

Re: wont start!!!!!?

Cougar,
Have you clicked on the pic I posted above? It clearly shows the black condenser wire going to the points, the green coil wire going to the same screw as the black condenser wire on the points, and the black wire from the coil going under the screw that holds the coil down. I tried to label it clearly but the red is a little hard to read.
I hope you have a torque wrench to torque your flywheel nut down to the proper torque or if you get it running you're likely to shear the woodruff key and be back to square one.
You will also need a feeler gauge to make sure the points gap is .020 when the rubbing block is on the high spot of the points cam where it says TOP.
If it's not right, it won't give any spark. If you get spark and your plug wires are reversed, it will backfire at best, but not run.
Mind if I ask how you got the flywheel off?
Good luck with your motor,
JBJ

Re: wont start!!!!!?

I wired it exactly how the picture was done. I still have no idea how its not getting any spark. I have replaced all the parts with new parts. Its not even sounding like it is wanting to start.

Above is a link to an old post of mine that I hope MIGHT be helpful.

A few questions need answering so we can talk you through it and help predict where the problem may be hiding:

1. Have you set the points to .020 as described above?
2. Are the points clean?
3. Have you checked all wires for cracks or chaffing?
4. ARe the spark plug wires new?
5. Does your motor have a stop button (kill switch)?
6. Are you certain the plug wires are installed in the sharp pin in the coils correctly?
7. Do you have a spark tester? (They're about 6 bucks at autozone, and a really handy tool.)

Lastly, if you have no spark, there's no chance of it ever running, so the spark should be your main concern right now, as I'm sure it is. Not whether it starts or not. If you get the spark right, I'll almost guarantee you we can help you get it running perfect, since the carb is so simple.

Give these guys enough info. and they'll help you diagnose the problem.
So far you've told us the kind of motor you have, and that you've put in new parts and wired it like the picture.
Talk to us!:) If I can't help you, I know there'e numerous people here who can---if you give them enough info!
JBJ
