I have been combining two 7.5s,a '76 with a seized powderhead and '75 with a seized gearbox to make one running one. Tonight was tank test. It wouldn't start. I have rebuilt the carb, and it has new gas in it. I get spark from both leads by testing with a spark plug on the block. But when I pulled the spark plugs to dry them, they were dry. Could the reeds be stuck from long time sitting?

You have gas going into the carburator, fuel pump OK? Reeds don't normally get stuck within a relatively short period of time

Re: Won't Start

I had a problem with a Mercury 9.8 that would not start. One plug was getting fuel and the other was dry. A local boat mechanic told me to do this.
1 Unplug the plug wires from the spark plugs.
2 Spray a very small amount of WD40 past the carb venturi
3 Pull the starter rope several times very hard.
4 Replace the plug wires and try to start it.

This worked for me.

Re: Won't Start

Thank you for your replies. I swapped the carbs last night. I knew one of the motors had run, at lest to the middle of the lake where it seized,so the carb idle setting should be near. After a few tries,I had blue smoke. I had really oiled the motor with an unknown history. I'm pretty happy, this motor has very good compression and the best of the parts. I'll swap back the rebuilt carb and set the idle.

I was amazed when I went to get a tach,my 40 year old one only did 6 and 8 cylinders,6x would be a coarse reading, I was able to buy a laser tach, for only $75.

I couldn't have gotten this motor repaired and running without the help from this forum.
