Won't start?

My son just got 96 boat with a VP 5.0FLPNCS and cobra SX OD. He tried it yesterday and ran for a while and restarted several times. Finally it came to a stop and would not start. After looking at it, I put in new plugs and water separator and also a new impeller just to be safe. Threw a little gas down the carb and it started but only for a few seconds. Does changing the separator need to fill up meaning the engine needs to stay started longer or could it be something else. My second guess would be a carb problem. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help. I should also say that when he first brought it home it started up fine and sounded great for an old boat.

Ayuh,.... It could be the carb, or the fuel pump, or a restriction in the tank...

You could try pre-fillin' the filter...

Thanks for come back Bond-o. I did think of those things too but it started fine when he first got it. I was thinking air in the line. Will try later to pull it off and fill it with gas. Will let you know.

Hey bond -o...just filled the water separator and nothing. The only other thing I thought of was diconnect the fuel from both sides and I thought I would see lots of gas spilling out, but nothing. Could a fuel filter go bad all of a sudden without any warning? Anything else I should try to check before taking in for an expensive bill?

Ayuh,.... The fuel tank needs suction to over come the anti-siphon valve...
That's why gas don't just run into the bilge when ya change the filter...

The Tank's pick-up might be what's Plugged up...

Fuel filters don't go Bad, they get fulla Crud, 'n water....

I mistyped. I meant does a fuel pump go bad all of a sudden. If the pick up is clogged, does that mean pulling the tank out and if not, where is it?
