Just put this coil in a month ago, Got it off ebay for 15 bucks. It came with a ballast resistor but I didnt wire it in thinking the boats resistor wire would be fine. I only use this coil a few time to start the boat and now no spark. I find it hard to belive the coil smoked already but I just need to get some thing straight with the wires like finding out what wire has the ballast in it. Still trying to find out why it is overheating so I am sure you an see where something like this would flip me out. Well back to the square one. I just hope I can get this all sorted out before it gets much colder. Thanks and happy new year
The easiest and one of the cheapest tools you can own is a spark tester from Harbor Freight tools. $4.95.
Troubleshooting is king!
Plug in tester, Do you have spark? Yes, move on. No, go back and test per the service manual. Sensor in distributor is a common failure point.
Happy New Year!
As Bondo indicated, at the top of this section there is the adults only. In side it is a link for trouble shooting your ignition system. The link below will take you straight to it. You need a 12V test light or volt meter
Points were toast. Need to get the ballast resistor in there. Get full 12 v at the coil. think it should be 9. Should be a wire at the starter that gives the coil a 12 v kick when starting. Just need to sort this all out then one day look into a conversion to get rid of the points.
O yea. A keg of beer to the guy who helps me find the right wiering diagram. My boat DOES NOT have a ignition amplifier and it DOES have a volt meter not a amp meter. More hints on the way as soon as I figure out how to post pictures.
