I recently came into a 1975 15hp Johnson outboard. It had been in storage for 18 years. I went ahead and replaced the driver coil (under flywheel) both condensers and both ignition coils. I also filed and set the points. In the process of changing the driver coil I found the replacement coil (oem) had the blue and white wire coming out of the opposite side than the one that was in the motor. I am assuming that there is no difference in the amount of voltage provided to the ignition coils no matter which wire is used on each of the points (correct??) I assume that the top cylinder and the lower cylinder can use either coil as long as the points were set to the top on the cam? I have spark to both plugs, and even with having rebuilt the fuel pump and carb as well as replacing all the fuel lines, I am not able to get the thing to start. ANY advise would be most appreciated! Oh, the compression tests at 95 psi on both cylinders.

Either swap wires going to the coils or swap plug wires and see if it cranks. You have to have the right wires to the correct cylinders.

I have tried that and no luck. I guess I will have to go old school and find out which cylinder is top dead center when each set of points is opening. Really was hoping to avoid pulling the flywheel again but seems like I will have no choice. Thanks for your answer.

Do the spark plugs have gas on them? Stick to the basics, air, fuel spark at the correct time...
