Hi all
Just rebuilt the lower unit on my 68 lark 40hp Evinrude electro shift.
Started it up after reinstalling the lower unit the engine ran like a top went to shut it down and the engine wouldn't shut down, it sounded as though it was running on 1 cylinder and I had to choke it out to shut it down.
Any ideas from the smarter ones on the forum?
I don't think it is anything to do with the lower unit
Thanks in advance

Sad to inform you, but I'm definitely not one of the smarter ones on this forum by any stretch of anybody's imagination, but I will try and answer some of your concerns and let the pros come in and correct me.

How did you try to stop the engine?

Sounds like the "kill" ignition option is not wired correctly or maybe a bad corroded connection. When you kill the engine, via a switch or something like that, you are merely shorting the primary of the coils together and ground. So there is no more spark...or shouldn't be any spark to keep it running. The fact that you stated that it sounds like it is running on one cylinder, points to a bad connection to short out the other ignition coil... At leas that is my opinion.

Yup I agree I replaced one coil when I had the flywheel off, I think that the other coil is possibly causing the issue.
it runs fine but if its not earthing it could cause the problem, I'm just a bit concerned about removing the flywheel too often and worried about causing damage.

Re: Won't stop!

If one of the black wires is not properly installed / damaged it will not stop.--------You can pull the flywheel numerous times without damage if you use the proper puller.---Torque the flywheel nut to 100 ft-lbs to prevent shearing the key.
