Won't turn over!!!!

So I just bought my first boat(1964 Starcraft). It has a late 60's Evinrude 40hp. The gas can that was sold with the boat had some old fuel in it(it had to be at least 3 years old). My Dad decided to try and start it with the old fuel instead of just letting me take my brand new tank, fill it up, and use that fuel. It started up, but sounded very rough, and turned off after about 10 seconds. It would not start after that. I now have the new tank with new fuel hooked up, and it just won't turn over. Should I just keep trying to turn it on, or is there something else I should do. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks.

It starts, but won't stay on when you let go of the key.

Re: Won't turn over!!!!

check the "big three".... compression, spark and fuel. it sounds like you have some of each ingredient, but do you have enough of each. do the checks for compression first, then spark, fuel air mix is a carb rebuild.

He did say he hooked it up to the new tank and fuel. I'd say if the tank had 3 year old + gas in it, it is pretty likely the carb had gas sitting in it for 3 + years, so maybe a good place to start. Of course, check for spark and compression as well.

Thanks guys. I'm going out now to work on it. I'll try using the pull cord.

old fuel is still in the fuel lines and carb unless you've drained them and forced fresh fuel in by pumping the primer bulb

I would say that the fuel, spark, and compression have been elimanated being it does start and run UNTILL he let's go of the IGN. SWITCH. I would replace IT (the ign. switch) first.
